This is my acrylic painting of the courtship of two pufferfish. The courtship involves elaborate mandala art sand sculpture built by males to attract females for mating. The process involves intricate geometric patterns, ridges and shell decorations that serve as a fitness test for the male. Females judge the quality of these massive underwater “crop circles” (up to 7 feet wide) and lay their eggs in the center if satisfied with the male guarding the nest until hatching.
