The illustration of the dog, was based on the bird dog of the book authors Dad. The dog was an English Setter bird dog named Whimpy. Whimpy was a good hunting birddog and was also family friendly. Chippy scolded the dog in his barking manner but the dog stayed until suppertime at the farm home nearby. The setting is a serene field with a blue sky overhead.
