These doves are often seen on the saguaro cacti in the Sonoran Desert, where they play a vital role in the cactus pollination and seed dispersal. The doves build homes inside the cacti and eat the saguaro fruit. Doves are seen as a sign of peace and love. I was inspired to paint this dove after seeing some on vacation.

The brilliant red crown of the male is usually hidden, but the male will raise it when he is excited, agitated or singing his territorial song. Description: This is my watercolor and ink painting of the popular six colorful, tall and thin beach houses known as the “birdhouses” at Dauphin Island, Alabama. Each of these houses have a covered boat dock on the side facing Bayou Aloe in the Gulf of Mexico. I was very inspired to paint these houses after seeing them while staying on this island. They were originally built for fishermen but today they are summer and vacation homes. The entire island has been designated as a bird sanctuary.
